I did it, I finally purchased my first digital camera.
So What?
Lots of people don’t have digital cameras, but myself and others have always believed it to be rather strange that I don’t own one. Here are a few reasons:
- This is the 21st century
- I work with computers/technology/digital photos every day
- I have disposable income
- I’ve spent a considerable amount of time in the past working on open source photo gallery software (for digital images)
Why This Camera?
Cheap, cheap cheap. I picked up the camera from Amazon with a 2GB SanDisk Ultra II card for $200.00 after tax and shipping. It’s not the best, and it’s not the worst. The SD1000 doesn’t have IS like some of the more expensive PowerShots, but for the cost I’ll accept it.
Why Now?
I’ve been meaning to purchase a DSLR for months now, but couldn’t bring myself to it. I still haven’t decided if I would actually lug one around or even want to take photos. The SD1000 is like a starter camera, if I use it I will consider getting a better one. After Rafe twittered about the SD1000 cost being so low on Amazon, I figured now was the time to strike, so I bit the bullet and added that bad boy to my cart.
Impressions?
Well, I haven’t even used it much but I will try to tonight. I took some test photos with various resolutions and settings to get a feel for if I trusted the auto-everything mode. I enjoy the manual mode, but it’s quite a hassle to go through the menus to adjust the shutter speed or f-stop for various conditions. I’ve also already dropped it once, so it’s off to a great start. Here are a few I shot in my office yesterday:

What’s Next?
I will require a place to host and share my photos, which means I need to figure out if I want to use my new Flickr Pro account I won at the Engadget meet up, Facebook Photos, or if I want to continue hacking at Gallery until it meets all of my needs. I want a solution that is easy (upload once) and all my friends can easily find them. What do you find to be the best solution for hosting images?
I’ve been having this issue myself lately.
Facebook is the only place where people I know will actually bother to look at my photos, but Facebook completely rapes image quality. It’s not a big deal for photos of your friends and whatever, but for anything art-y it’s just complete crap.
Flickr is nice, but nobody I know uses it and I don’t really get any passerby looking at my shots.
Gallery has the same issues as Flickr, except that the userbase is much smaller and few people care enough to register an account in order to comment.
For the time being I’ve been posting to Facebook, Flickr, and deviantART, with links to the dA versions at a higher quality/resolution/etc.
I wonder if there’s room for a F8 application that integrates Flickr/Gallery/etc.?
If you are fine with transferring the copyright of your images to Facebook, by all means upload them there.
Flickr is good, but I would really like to know what your problem with Gallery is?
Hello, robert this is your cousin kyle.
I love Flickr because of the community aspect. Find a few (or a lot) that you love, then you’ll get out what you put into it.
I found you because you added me to your Pownce account.
